"Reading, Writing and Tired Hippie Politics

Teachers in Madison, Wis., had their third-graders composing and mailing letters urging a halt to the war in Iraq as part of a civics lesson — until school administrators stepped in and put a stop to it, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

Julie Fitzpatrick, one of the 10 teachers at Allis Elementary School that dreamed up the project, said the assignment was intended to demonstrate 'citizen action,' a standard part of the district's social studies curriculum.

'We saw peace as a common good,' Fitzpatrick said. 'We were just advocating that people keep working toward peace.'

But following complaints from some parents, school officials pointed out that even in Madison teachers are discouraged from 'exploiting the institutional privileges of their professional positions to promote candidates or parties and activities.'"

Art of prayer: Are we out of practice? | IndyStar.com

Art of prayer: Are we out of practice? | IndyStar.com:

"For Monty Gaither, Thanksgiving prayer is one of those issues that has been glossed right over in the grand tradition of ignoring family drama.

Gaither is the Arizona state director of American Atheists, and does not pray. Yet, at one turkey dinner, there was no getting around it.

'My oldest sister had recently converted to Pentecost,' says Gaither, 49, of Phoenix. 'She knew I was an atheist, knew that neither my wife nor I or son pray. We all sat down, and as I got ready to help myself, she said, 'Now, let's pray.' Well, while she prayed, I went ahead and filled my plate and my son's plate. She gave me a look, and then we ate.'

There was no discussion, and never another prayer."

New Scientist Breaking News - Billboards beam adverts to passing cellphones:
"Ignoring adverts is about to get a lot tougher with the development of billboards and advertising posters that use Bluetooth to beam video ads direct to passing cellphones."
I finally get a bluetooth phone, which I use with the bluetooth headset, and now I have to worry about this garbarge.
And do not let them fool you. The article says:
Furthermore, there is no risk of downloading viruses or other malware to the phone, says O’Regan: “We don’t send applications or executable code.” The system uses the phone’s native download interface so they should be able to see the kind of file they are downloading before accepting it, he adds.
May be true, but what is to stop people from doing it AND sending viruses to me. It does not make me feel any better. At least with Bluetooth it has to ask you if you want to make a connection. Too bad most people give up when it keeps asking and go ahead and accept it anyway.

Man arrested for hopping on to home Wi-Fi network - Computerworld

Man arrested for hopping on to home Wi-Fi network - Computerworld:
"The state law under which Smith was charged prohibits accessing a computer or network knowingly, willfully and without authorization. Kajtsa said it's the first time anyone has been arrested in St. Petersburg for using someone else's Wi-Fi.

'This is a very little-used statute,' Kajtsa said.

Gartner Inc. analyst Ken Dulaney said he has no sympathy for Wi-Fi users such as Dinon.

'He should have put security on his wireless LAN system. It's the guy's fault that he left it open,' Dulaney said. 'Don't the police have anything better to do?'

Open wireless LANs are still common in many residential areas, even though Wi-Fi routers can be set not to broadcast their names, and tools for encryption have improved since the early days of the technology. Dulaney estimated that half of all wireless LANs are completely open to unauthorized users."

While I agree that people should close up their networks and make them secure, I would aslo say that the man broke the law of unauthorized access of a computer network. Because the owner of the network did not make it secure means that the person had a right to break the law. Telling us the police should find something else to do is immature at best. When do we as a people stand up and say a law is a law, break it and you get punished.
The other thing is the level of the user. I am fairly good with my computer skills since i have 25 years Computers and 15 years of that with PCs. I have a hard time setting up a secure wireless network, an amature does not have a chance.

InformationWeek > Privacy > Yahoo Chat-Room Decision Draws Fire > June 23, 2005:
"Rather than shutdown user-created chat rooms in mass, Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., should have targeted only those involved in the illicit behavior, said the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a free speech and privacy advocate in San Francisco.

'This is a real overreaction on the part of Yahoo,' Annalee Newitz, policy analyst for the EFF, said. 'To just unilaterally shut down chat rooms is really chilling to free speech.'"

Sorry guys, this was not "free speech". The reason they are pulling the plug is because sponsors are pulling the ad dollars they need to survive.
I do not see the EFF rushing in to put up chat rooms for all these people. If they are not going to do that, why do they have the nerve to tell Yahoo how to run their business. Yahoo cannot afford to run chat rooms without sponsors. And some sponsors were pulling company wide not just in the chats.

AP Wire | 05/08/2005 | Scientists draw fire for boycotting evolution hearings
So why are they so worried about teaching creationism (here called intelligent design) in the schools. Is their argument so weak that they cannot take a little free discussion about things. In its place they boycott and other things. Seems that they cannot take the heat. I personally believe that teaching just evolution is teaching a bigger faith then if you teach that some intelligent being made the universe. You mean to tell me something as complicated as DNA just came into existence by accident. Seems that there is a better chance of winning the lottery 3 days in a row than that happening and we all know what the chances of winning the lottery just one day are.

10 Laws of Computer Security

# Law #1: If a bad guy can persuade you to run his program on your computer, it's not your computer anymore.
# Law #2: If a bad guy can alter the operating system on your computer, it's not your computer anymore.
# Law #3: If a bad guy has unrestricted physical access to your computer, it's not your computer anymore.
# Law #4: If you allow a bad guy to upload programs to your Web site, it's not your Web site any more.
# Law #5: Weak passwords trump strong security.
# Law #6: A computer is only as secure as the administrator is trustworthy.
# Law #7: Encrypted data is only as secure as the decryption key.
# Law #8: An out of date virus scanner is only marginally better than no virus scanner at all.
# Law #9: Absolute anonymity isn't practical, in real life or on the Web.
# Law #10: Technology is not a panacea.

I have seen these laws around for years now, at least since the early 90's. But somehow this week they have been attributed a lot to Microsoft since they appear to be on their web site. While they are great rules to follow and I have taught them as part of computer classes that I have taught, trust me, Microsoft did not come up with them.

The New York Times > Washington > Conservatives Pick Soft Target: A Cartoon Sponge:

While I will refrain from discussing the merits of Spoungebob and his homesexuality, I think Dr. Dobson has gone off the deep end to say that Spungebob himself is evil. They would have to tar and feather the whole bunch of charachters mentioned. Anyone who watches the show (and with kids I watch it), would know that homesexual agenda is not part of the show.
On the other hand, I found these two quotes from the people resposnible for the video mentioned telling:

"'The fact that some people may be upset with each other peoples' lifestyles, that is O.K.,' Mr. Rodgers said. 'We are just talking about respect.'

Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics 'need medication.'"

OK, so we are talking about respect, but the people against them are mental retards. I guess resspect means if you agree with me it is respect, if you disagree it means you need to be sedated and taken out of society. Does anyone besides me see the weirdness of this?
